Question by : What should I do over the winter to stay in shape for golf?
I am 15 and a 6 handicap. I live in a climate where our golf season starts in early April. I play for the high school golf team and I have been going to an indoor driving range (Hitting off mats). Is this good enough or should I be doing more to be able to jump right back into golf.

Question by : What are my chances of getting into the Naval Academy?
I am a junior now in a private school and am taking all college prep classes. Due to my freshman year I have a 2.2 GPA. By the end of this year my GPA should be a 3.0. I am getting into the sea cadets right now, and am on three varsity sports:
Golf
Swimming
Polo
I am also in the environmental club, and am on the fishing team. Been thinking about the Naval Academy since last semester, and am extremely curious what my chances are, even possibly for NAPS.

Well I can’t quite tell you what YOUR chances will be, but I can tell you a little bit about the Naval Academy.
I’ve heard that you need a recommendation letter written by your state’s Senator to apply. I’m not sure if this is correct.

Question by Italia 28: Long winded Golf Grip question, Love the Sport?
OK I just took up golf again after 10 years, I just felt like I was starting to do better, a few pars and a lot of bogey’s or double bogey’s then I golf with this guy who golfs 2 under par, and he tells me my grip is so wrong and that is where my inconsistency comes from, tells me I need to learn the right way or I will never do it right.
So I try it for 4 holes, did terrible I am talking 8 and 9 per hole, I start to feel like I don’t even want to play if I am going to make this work, finally I reverted back to my baseball type grip and start to hit the ball and enjoy the game again.
I keep my hands close together but I do not over lap, should I try to make my grip more accurate or adapt so I can get better, any links would be great, pictures what ever, keep in mind I love the sport and would like to get much much better!
Thanks!

Answer by ginger99
just do what feels right to you, but if you really want to get better than you need to go to the range alot and try the new grip.

Question by Ethan: Treating a torn pectoral muscle near the heart?
I believe I have a pulled/strained pectoral muscle near my heart. I’ve been experiencing pain in the area for almost 2 years now in the area around my heart. I don’t have any heart problems, and it only bothers me when I do a physical activity. I’m a baseball and golf player, and I’m in high school so we work out in PE class.
I told my doctor about it about 6 months ago, described what it was and how long I’d had it, and he just brushed it off like it was no big deal. He said “Eh, just a pulled muscle, it’ll heal.”
But it hasn’t. Today, I decided I was going to go outside and practice my golf swing. After about 5 minutes of working on my swing, the pain came and got progressively worse. Then, even if I stop and just sit and rest, it still will hurt for about 5 more minutes before going away.
I looked up how to treat a strained pectoral muscle around the heart and it says to apply ice and heat, alternating every hour. I might want to do this, but I want to make sure it’s ok. Is applying ice right over my heart area okay? And then heat the next hour? I’m a little scared because I’ve never done it before. Just want to make sure that’s okay to do because I need to heal this pectoral muscle, and it’s right in my heart area.

Thanks.

Answer by hunter25
Yeah it’s completely fine over your heart, it won’t effect it at all. To be honest, even with that treatment it’s going to take a long time to heal, the best thing to do is physical therapy to increase muscle mass. You should recommend physical therapy to your doctor and he’ll let you know where u can do it at. I pulled my hamstring 2 yrs ago and it still was killing me, so I did PT 6 months ago and it’s amazing how my h better it is now. Your doctor should have offered this the first time, I would go back to him and tell him icing and heat aren’t working and u would like to try physical therapy.

Question by B: How would I go about building a golf resort?
Okay its always been my dream to build my own golf resort. I’ve got 500,000. How do I build my resort starting with that. I know that the golf course will cost 2 mil +, but I don’t have that kind of money. And please don’t tell me I need to win the lottery. That would be nice though.

Dear friend.
As you and I know that those $ 500k is not enough. But don’t make that into a problem. There are several creative ways and solutions to pursue this goal. The goal and the mission will be hard but not impossible.
First of all, do you have an ideal location in where you want to develop this in? What State or Country? Mexico? USA? California? If you don’t have a location already, then I suggest that you should start thinking for a location. Location is key!
Second, upon deciding for a location. I would recommend in doing an in depth report of the business model. Such as in how this would be finance. Marketing strategies? Business plan? Finance plan? ETC!
About financing this project. You should consider in bringing outside investors or partners that could help in developing this. I bet that there is so many investors that won’t mind in investing on this project if the proposal is perfect. The bottom line is that you need to assemble a team that is knowledgable in this type of field. The team could be two or up to 6.
Upon having a motivated team that will share the same vision as you, all the team members would need to do thier homework. That mean’s reading tedious books, seeking out consultants, and looking for the right people to get on board that could have connections.
I am college student that’s studying business. If you like, I could be your sidekick on this… Let me know at uobn100@yahoo.com… There are so many things to consider that this is not the proper forum…

Question by Ryan S: Overlapping vs. Interlocking golf grip?
I have always used the overlapping grip for about the past 4 years and have had moderate game improvement (100 – 85) but I really seem to shift the grip more into my palm during my swing and wearing my golf glove really thin in my left heel of my hand. I switched to the interlocking grip and now I don’t wear holes in my golf glove anymore and even picked up 10 yards (300 – 310) on my driver because it allows me to hinge my wrists better and keep the grip in my fingers. I should also add that I have X-large hands and 110 – 120mph swing speed. Getting to my question, I’ve always been told that the interlocking grip is for female golfers and small male golfers (small hands), why is this and why shouldn’t I (X-large) use the interlocking grip.
Best answer:
Answer by sportsfanatic
Although interlocking grip is recomended for people for smaller hands, you can still use it even if you have large hands. Just look at Tiger Woods. He uses interlock grip and hes not a female golfer nor does he have small hands. Interlock grip is recomended for golfers with small hands because it makes it easier to turn your wrists over. Use whatever grip you feel comfortable with and don’t listen to what other people say.

Question by Boogity: Can golf be used as a cross training sport for running?
I am planning on starting a marathon training program soon and it has specific days of cross training. It suggests swimming, biking or running, but I’m curious… Can golf be my cross training activity? I always walk when I play, so I figured just hitting some balls in between wouldn’t spoil the walk too much. What do you think?
Thanks for the answers guys. Would you say playing golf on a rest day is a bad idea? Or is that too much? I would really like to work in one round a week…

Answer by VIET L
No, no, and NO!!!!
Golf does not get your heart rate up or make you lose your breath.
It might make your arms sore, if you hit hard, but it’s better to swim, bike, play football, soccer or basketball because it has running.

Question by Seoul Man: Will golf simulators mess up your swing?
I have a rich friend who’s considering buying an indoor virtual golf simulator for his house, with full video emulation of famous golf courses. It requires hitting off a mat, I think.
Will this mess up his swing?
Best answer:
Answer by igormarkovic3390
Those things are inaccurate and can not tell if you hit a slice or hook on your ball, so they can be really decieving.
I wouldn’t reccomend it. I just go outside to an empty park and practice with my pitching wedge. Your friend could always go to a driving range or even buy a golf course if he’s rich enough.

Question by : What are my odds of getting into the air force academy?
I am in all honer classes. I am on the football team, golf, and I am in a team sports class. I am getting my single engine pilot license. I am in community service and I am joining Civil Air Patrol. Is there any recommendations to make me look more appealing to the academy. Thanks!
Best answer:
Answer by Tyler
“honer classes”? Your grammar doesn’t bode very well for your chances, and unless your GPA is like 4.5 weighted, you don’t stand much of a chance. the pilot license means nothing. you also didn’t mention leadership
all in all, doesn’t seem like you have much of a chance

Question by : Are there any discount golf cards or programs for reduced priced golf in Tucson, Arizona in…?
…February & March?
Looking for the best deals on golf during the winter months in Tucson, AZ. I know the prices go up when the snowbirds arrive but hoping there might be some discounts.
Best answer:
Answer by Andrew
Try this website, even in the popular winter months you can get a discounted last reservation if you’re willing to be flexible:
http://www.golfnow.com/travel/cty.asp?TRK=g_golfnow_travel_tee-times&gclid=CI6U_YfGjZACFRsTawodTUKqtQ
Otherwise it’s pretty tough to get a discount. But don’t forget the public courses! They’re not as glitzy as the resorts but Tucson has some very nice public courses.

If you want to go to the best golf academy if you want to go pro, go to the IJGA, the International Junior Golf Academy in Hilton Head, SC where Tiger’s coach, Hank Haney is the head instructor. It’s a full academy with academics in Heritage Academy which you can finish your high school, and you live in house dorms with other roomates that are also students, and house parents. Students that go to the IJGA are all aspiring golfers from all around the world who want to play college golf, and hopefully become pro. Students attend the IJGA for a full school year or semester, so you can try to go there next semester, or for your junior and senior year. In the academy you work on your game by playing, practicing, and getting lessons, tips, and getting coached by Hank Haney and his instructors. Then you play competitive tournaments in the IJGT, the International Junior Golf Tour with other students, and that is where colleges see you for scholarships. Not everyone that attends the IJGA gets scholarships, so if you don’t you can stay there for their post graduate program, which is the same thing, you improve in your game, and go to school in the same time, and you can turn pro. There is a show on the Golf Channel which shows lives of students in the IJGA starring Hank Haney. It’s School of Golf: Hilton Head Island, and it’s on the Golf Channel every Tuesday in 11 PM ET/8 PT, and every Wednesday in 10 PM ET/7 PT. I highly recommend watching this show before considering going to the IJGA. But if you looking for the best golf academy out there, the IJGA is the best if you want to become pro. You should not miss out on this opportunity, you should consider going to IJGA, it’s the best academy out there if you want to become pro. For more information about the IJGA, and the show School of Golf: Hilton Head Island, the websites are below in the sources.
